Excel hangs server when saving file (running OS X server 10.2.8)

A

Adam Wizon

I have this intermitant problem saving an excel file on my server. I
am logged into the server running Excel and click the save icon on the
toolbar. The write starts to take place and then I get the pinwheel
of death. Excel file was originally copied over from my windows box,
and the problem does not happen consistently. The other interesting
thing is that Excel never has hung like that on any of my client
machines. All the updates to Office V.x have been installed. I
haven't found any clues in the system.log file on the server. Has
anyone ran into this problem? Is there a solution?

Hi

I would start with some simple troubleshooting steps.

Run Disk Utility First Aid and use it to repair permissions on your
computer. That might help.

Don't think its a perms problem. I can start Excel, use a fresh
workbook, copy and paste some data from another app, then save. Excel
hangs, but I can quit out of other apps. However, I can do a normal
restart or shutdown once this condition occurs. The log file has some
stuff about a deprecated function in excel and it looks like the window
manager gets hosed. I've X'd out my server name in the log excerpt
below.

Hi Adam,

I don't think the stuff in the console log will help with this problem.
This is a network problem. I think you could use TCP flow capture
program to see what is going on with the network when there's a hang.

I would still start with Disk Utility, though.

I tried Disk Utility and Excel is still hanging on writing a file after
a cut and paste operation. I'm now running Panther Server 10.3.2, and
the problem is identical to the problem I had under Jaquar Server
10.2.8. I searched this newsgroup and I think someone else also had
this issue, but there was no solution posted.

I did a 'ps -aux' and saw that Excel and some Microsoft database daemon
were running. I don't know if that's normal or not, but I know that
Excel is unusable on the server because of this problem.

Hi again,

The Microsoft database daemon is for notifications (for example if you use
the flag for follow-up option or have a reminder set in Entourage). It is
probably not involved in your problem.

The hint about cut and paste could indicate that the server is not allowing
Excel to use temporary files (hidden ones).

I have run the disk utility to repair permissions. The problem still
exists. Clients still functioning fine, no problem with saving on
client machines. Is there some way to check on the server's use of
temporary files? This problem is very frustrating, it makes Excel
completely unusable on the server. Thanks again for your help

Adam
