Excel hangs with just simple typing in cells

Hi there...

I have a Mac Pro with 10gb of memory. I've recently updated to Office 2008 due to having some issues with Word 2004 - I figured that it may be a conflict with snow leopard.

Anyway, I now have a 'proper' issue with Excel. All installed and updated as it should be. Here's what's happening...

1. Type anything into a cell - eg "123"
2. Hit enter
3. Excel hangs, the pinwheel rotates for around a second, the cell below then becomes available to type into.

So, for every single cell that I type into or edit, I have a hang of around 1 second before I can continue. This also applies if I select a cell and try to edit it. eg change the size of the font. No matter how small the change, any form of edit within a cell produces a hang in excel.

All other application run smoothly and quickly whilst Excel is hanging.

I've been on to Apple and had the machine given the all clear.
I have reinstalled Snow Leopard from the original disks and checked the rosetta box just in case one thread I read online was correct.

I'd love some help on this. Failing this I'm going to have to try to get it refunded as the software is unusable.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Regards

Simon

Does the same thing happen with normal view vs. page layout view? Do you
have an HP print driver?

Thank you for your reply...
So, it's the same with Normal and Page view.

And it's a Yes for the HP Printer drivers... I've an HP all in one printer.

And if this helps at all...

When I click on Normal View at the bottom, it switches over very quickly. When I switch back to page view it takes a second or two (whilst hanging) to flick back.

In fact, most functions seem to be incredibly sluggish. Only excel though. Not in Word or powerpoint etc etc...

There is an issue with Office 2008 and 10.6 and HP printer drivers. Keep
watching this thread for news about a solution.

That's most likely because Excel relies on the printer driver to generate
the page layout... Like Bob G replied, there currently is an issue with HP
drivers in Snow Leopard which is probably causing the delay.

Could you please try whether the workaround depicted in this post solves your
slowness?
