Excel Header Labels Don't Zoom Correctly

Row and column headers do not zoom correctly along with the rest of a spreadsheet. As the zoom factor increases, the header labels overlap and obscure labels in adjacent rows and columns. The problem can be alleviated by manually adjusting row height, but this is a cumbersome and unsatisfactory work around.

This problem is even worse with the outlne level buttons in the upper right corner of a spreadsheet. It appears that the zoom factors vary between the outline buttons, the text in the buttons, and the rest of the spreadsheet.

Neither of these problems appears in the Windows version of Excel. Can Excel 2008 be configured to handle this correctly?

They seem to work OK for me. Can you be a little more specific? Do you mean
the A,B,C column headers, or text placed in a cell as a column header. What
fonts are you using?

Bob,

Note that I am referring to the Excel | View | Zoom not the Mac OS Zoom In/Out. My problem is primarily with the 1, 2, 3 row numbers on the far left of the window. The A, B, C column headers are also affected.

At a zoom factor of 100%, the row numbers will be fully displayed and vertically centered in the header cell. When the zoom factor is increased, the size of the row number font seems to increase faster than the row height. The effect is that the top and bottom of the row numbers are clipped. You can simulate this by setting to row height to something like .12".

The problem is worse with the outline level numbers in the upper left corner of the spreadsheet. These are the numbers that are used to hide or unhide grouped/outlined rows and columns. At a zoom factor of 100%, the numbers are properly sized and centered in a box - they appear and act as buttons. When the zoom factor is increased, the size of the boxes seems not to change, while the numbers get larger. Ultimately, the numbers overlap each other and the small boxes create an even more jumbled appearance.

I realize this is just an aesthetic issue, but it is annoying that so much of the application is otherwise well done.

Thank you for your help.

One thing that comes to mind is that this can happen if the Row Height has
been manually adjusted. Often the proportionality is negatively affected,
but this is not unique to the Mac - it happens on the PC as well.

To test whether that's the issue select an affected row then choose Format>
Row - Autofit & see if that corrects it for that row.

Bob,

The Autofit helps somewhat, but generally I need to manually specify a row height so that the labels display properly. I'll just keep on using this approach since it doesn't seem to be a problem for others.

I've taken the liberty of emailing two small screen grabs so you can see the problem with the outline buttons.

Thanks
Boris
