Is it possible to increase the maximum number of worksheets per workbook
beyond 255 in any of the versions of Excel?

I am currently using 97 and need in excess of 500 worksheets in the one
workbook.

You can add more worksheets until your computer don't want more, 255 is not
a limit. But I doubt 500 would be very stable, you'd have to use very simple
content and minimal formatting I think. Never stressed the limits myself,
but I have seen postings where 350 some sheets have caused problems.

Never add more sheets! Because you can end up with corrupted files and you
will lose all data.
it is not recommended.
