Excel import

Marc

Hi,

I'm using an Excel worksheet to capture project task
progress from a number of people within the company.

I've tried to use the Project 'import wizard' to bring
this data into a blank project, but it won't let me map an
Excel 'tasks' column to an equivalent 'tasks' column in
Project. Everything else seems to go across?

Also, is there a way of getting Excel to assign a 'unique
record number' to individual tasks on the spreadsheet?
Again the plan would be to map this to a unique task
number in Project.

Thanks very much,

Marc

Hello Marc,
Generally, this kind of import works well, but how the data is organized in
the Excel sheet ? And what do you expect to retrieve in Project ?
If you want, you can send me a representative piece of your Excel sheet and
I'll look at it.

I'd recommend you flesh out a dummy project in Project with the basic
type of information that you expect to be importing from Excel, e.g.
Task Name, duration, work, work remaining, predecessors, assignments,
.... Then use the export/import wizard to export this data to an Excel
spreadsheet. Look at how it formats the data. Test this format and
your procedure by re-importing into a new Project file. Then, once you
get the hang of it and have it going properly, then populate the Excel
sheet with the data you really want to import and then just do it.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
