Excel in IE causes 0xC0000005

We have a web site running on Win2k, IIS 5 which runs a query against
SQL server and returns the information to Excel. This was working
fine, and still works for users with Excel 2000, but now those users
still on Excel 97 have got real problems. As far as I can see the only
changes that have been made are Windows Updates (which I am backing
out).

The problem is as follows:
Select the report to be run.
Excel pops up and disappears
IE gives the Open/Save dialog showing the file name 'file'
If you select Open the file you get the search or select program from
list dialog.
If you select Notepad you can see the xml code
If you select Internet Explorer you get the report results
If you select Excel you get a exception 0xc0000005

Further investigation reveals that if you select anything other than
Excel there is an Excel process running at 99% CPU utilisation.

Anyone got any ideas at all?

Thanks in advance,
Eddie
