Excel keeps hanging

Hi,

I have a very new iMac with the 2.8GHz core 2 duo processor and 4GB 800MHZ DDR2 SDRAM. All updates are installed...

Excel is driving me spare as it is 'hanging' sometimes for 2 minutes - sometimes for 5 minutes, occasionally longer. It just seems as though the machine is running out of memory and taking ages to process anything.

iTunes and Entourage are the only other programs running at the same time.

I am working with a variety of text, drawings and calculations in the sheets, but the picture files are not large - less than 100kb.

Any suggestions to how I can get this machine working faster and stop the hangs? I boosted the ram especially so I wouldn't be faced with this exact problem and this is exactly what I got!

Thanks in advance for any enlightenment!

We'll need some more information about what "hanging" means. When does it
occur? Is it on file Open, close, recalculation, in response to some action?
If so what? Where did the file originate? What version (exactly) of the OS
and Excel? Your question as posed really sounds like: "I have a 2004 car
that is running badly. What is wrong with it?"

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the reply. My exact software versions as follows:

Mac OS X 10.5.7
Excel 2008 for Mac 12.1.7

The computer was brand new as of Feb 09.

When it hangs, the multi coloured wheel spins for any length of time from a few minutes, up to ten minutes, after which time, I force close the sheet and restart Excel.

I have taken the term 'HANG' from the Activity monitor that I always refer to whenever Excel stops functioning properly and I need to force close the program...

In the monitor window, Excel lights up red and says it is not responding. If I hit 'Inspect', it shows the number of recent 'hangs' which I assume it is referring to the number of times it stops working.

It is 'Hanging' mostly on recalculations and responses to actions. Opening and closing is fine.

The files have all originated from this current computer and software install.

To me, it seems as though there is not enough memory for the system to do what it needs to do, but the RAM has been boosted, so I am stumped.

Thanks, Christiaan

Thanks for all the info. It seems like the problem is with the file. Can you
describe its contents. Or, if it is not proprietary, you can email it to me,
and At least I can try it on my machine to see what may be happening.
