Excel linked NA dates and Durations with decimals

The actual dates in my project file are linked from excel. Where the date
cell has not been filled out yet in excel, the actual date cell in project
displays NA.
All my calender settings are default and all tasks are multiples of full
days yet tasks with subtasks display durations that are incorrect and have
decimals. Could this be because of the "value" of NA? And is there a way
around it?
Once actual dates have been entered and there are no NA values for the
subtasks the task duration is correct and without decimals.

"NA" is displayed when there is no actual date.

This NA should not affect the calculation of summary task durations in any
way. One way of troubleshooting is to go to tools menu / options / view tab
and choose a date format which includes the time. Investigate any tasks
which do not start at 8:00 AM or finish at 5:00 PM

All the dates start at 8am and finish at 5pm, or 8am for milestones. So that
is not the cause. And even if it had been then it would have been quite a
coincidence to add up to a round number when all the dates are inputted.
Because like I said, once all subtask actual dates have been entered and
there are no NA values for the subtasks the summary task duration is correct
and without decimals.
Please go to: http://masamiki.com/project/customfieldFAQ.htm
It states that ...project gives a numerical value of 4294967296 (2 to the
32nd power - 1) if the field is "NA" (blank).
Could this not be a cause?

No.

If project does not find a date it puts "NA" that is just the way it is.
Summary tasks are calculated from sub tasks.
Do you have any actual duration or actual work against any of the subtasks?

No actual duration or actual work has been inputted. The actual durations
shown are calculated automatically. And all actual work is shown as 0.
