Excel loading bogus files on startup. Why?

Excel (2000) has recently started doing something weird. When I click on
the icon to start the programme, it automatically loads a file from the
root of C: (one time it was a name.log file and now it has started doing
it with a small .jpg I have in C: temporarily.

My xlstart directory is clean, so why is it doing this very annoying
thing?

Any ideas?

Mike,

Go to the Tools menu, choose Options, then the General tab.
There, ensure that the "Alternate Startup Directory" setting is
empty.

You are a legend, Chip! Thanks a million! That has been bugging me for
ages and I never found (or noticed) that option.

I assumed any startup would have been handled by xlstart and didn't
count on an alternate choice being located elsewhere.
