Excel Multiple opening

Hi

After reinstalling Excel 2002 I find that if I try to open 2 or more files
from within Windows Explorer or from within Excel itself, it open in more
than one instance of the program, rather than 2 files WITHIN the one running
application

What can I do to correct this please?

What I want is to be able to see all open Excel (or Word) files by accessing
the Windows Menu

Can I alter the setting assuming its a Microsoft default so that I can do
this?

Incidentally in Excel, before the 2nd file opens I get a message that
"Personal.xls is locked for editing"
That file contains my macros but as soon as I click cancel, it seems to free
up the macros for ONE of the files. There are no macros available in the
second file as per the message

In the old arrangement the "personal.xls" file was available for as many
files as I cared to open - that's what I need again.

TIA
Ron

That does sound like multiple instances, but just an easy check first.

Tools|options|view tab|windows in taskbar
Is it checked?

If it is, uncheck it. Did that fix the problem? (I didn't think so.)

Sometimes one of these works:

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

An alternative might be to do:
Try Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)
