Excel: Mysteriously Re-naming Files

I had placed eight files with different names into one
folder on my desktop. Then, I decided to rename all the
files by "just changing" the first beginning text to OWC-
JH and I left my desk for a minute and when I returned I
discovered that Excel had changed all the file names.
Now, all eight (8) files read OWC-JH Statical Map
Data.xls so I am curious to know if something like this
has ever happened to anyone else.

I've never seen that. What OS and XL version are you using?

How did you "just change" the "first beginning text" (and what was that
text)? Why did you conclude that Excel changed all the file names?
