excel no show

R

Ron

Using XP Home SP2, Office 2000 Professional
..
When I try to open Excel from either the desktop shortcut or Start>Programs
it appears only on the taskbar as Microsoft Excel - Book 1. The only command
which works from there is R click close. I also cannot open any existing
Excel files. The other Office programs open ok, but the Office Assistant and
help cannot be displayed, although I can hear the Office Assistant.

The only change I remember implementing was the installation of a font from
my other computer. I uninstalled it to no effect. I have tried Detect and
Repair, System Restore and reinstalling Office. I use Zone Alarm, Spyware
Blaster, Spybot, AVG and Adaware.

Thank you
Ron

Uninstalled Office and installed Excel only. No change.
Tried opening an Excel file from Search. No luck.

Thank you DatabaseBen and Dragonman.

With my limited knowledge the only other means which occurs to me is to again
try Search and locate the Office Folder. If you open this then you should
see Excel within the Folder. Try opening from there.

Tried Search>Office Folder>Excel. Still no go. The small Excel window
appears for an instant and then disappears without the program opening, but
is displayed on the task bar.

Thanks Dragonman

Sorry Ron but I'm running out of ideas. Have you tried to reinstall just
Excel from the original disk (if this is possible)? It sounds as if the .exe
file of the Excel program is corrupted somehow. Otherwise I reckon it should
run from the Office folder. Also you could try to repair the installation
from Control Panel>Microsoft Office> or a full re-install of the Office disk.

Excel will function in safe mode. I then tried re-register Excel with
Windows, start without custom toolbars and menus ( no xlb files), start
without addins (none), start without startup files ( no xlstart files), run
detect and repair, delete temp files, and checked VBA references (required 4
files only are checked). The only change has been the return of the Office
Assistant.

Thanks

in safe mode there are no startups in msconfig
and there are no third party drivers loaded as well.

download autoruns from sysinternals.com
it will catergorize the loaded processes in
the memory, which include references to
the startups and drivers.

i would disable (not delete) all of the startups
by going to the boot tab and unchecking
each one. then double clicking its filename
that will then open your registry and show you
that the key has been disabled. uncheck (or
check) and double click the line item individually.

look at the tasks and driver tabs too and disable
anything that is unusual to you. but take care
and allow drivers that are "a" specific from
microsoft and your hardware.

before rebooting, double check
your pagefile and make sure that
you have a min of 2 and a max of 1152.

see what the symptoms are now...

boot execute - autocheck
scheduled tasks - none
drivers - could not see anything unusual, but I have limited knowledge
pagefile - 1004
no change in symptoms

Thanks for your continued support, I have tried everything I could find on
Google

well, we know your
excel works in safemode.
therefore, there is nothing wrong
with the o.s.

but whatever is interferring with
the excel in normal mode is being
caused by something being loaded
in the o.s.

pagefile - 1004 implies what
that it = 1004 min or max?
set it to customer min=2 and max 1152

there may be a chance that excel is disabled,
but find it a little hard to beleive. Go into
safemode and start excel. Under help and in
the about dialog there is a button for enabling/disabling
the modules. Check to see the state of excel
in there.

what you might want to do is to do a repair of the
o.s. via your windows setup cd. If there are
unrecognizable/uncompatiable or corrupted
drivers, the cd will replace them.

or you might want to test your system
with openoffice which has an excel
compatiable spreadsheet module.

also, eventhough google is an excellent
search engine, the real expert data on
ms excel is found at microsoft.com
search for something like "troubleshooting excel"

Thinking about my problem, Excel must be running because of the task bar
notification and the Task Manager indicates that it is running, but not
visible. Also the Office Assistant was audible but not vivible. Therefore
with my limited knowledge I suspected a driver problem. I did a repair via
the cd as you suggested, and everything now works fine.

Thank you DatabaseBen for your continued support. It is much appreciated.
Ron.
