Excel Office:Mac not responding to sum

MacOSXG4 with Microsoft Office v.X. Opened Excel
spreadsheets and all decimal points have disappeared.
Autosum no longer works. Formatting cells "number" no
longer works. All spreadsheet files have changed since
they were last opened last week. I cannot fix this -
cannot get the files to return to what they were. Cannot
re-enter data and have it stay correct. Intnese
electrical storms last week, power loss, but files were
saved and were not open at the time. All MS word
documents are intact. What could have happened at what's
the next step? Months of rental property data kaput.
Thanks for any help I can get. Had internet until
Saturday when router on DSL stopped working.

This is totally beyond anything I've seen. I'd start with some basic
troubleshooting:
