Excel Office Mac

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I have a number of files in .xlsx format
After attempting to install an "Update" for excel, I can no longer open these files.

They are not big, contain no pictures or macros.

The message says that I must go to Microsoft website [link provided] and get an upgrade
No such upgrade exists.
One cannot help but wonder if this is part of the covert war between MS and Apple, since it is clear that Apple is the superior product.
I have used PC's since 1982, but after finally migrating to Apple, I will never return to a PC. However, the fact is that most business spreadsheets work with Excel, so I need a solution, fast.
Help!

This seems to be an unfortunate unforeseen consequence of the update. There
is NO "covert war". Keep watching here or Mactopia as this seems to be a
pretty common and, of course urgent problem.

Thank you Bob Greenblatt

Of course there is a struggle between Apple and MS, and why not? Good business demands competition, and MS is well adept at protecting itself, as it should. Apple though is finally making inroads, and we should welcome this.

Can I uninstall and re-install Excel alone without having to do this for the entire Office Mac application?

Cheers

Can I uninstall and re-install Excel alone without having to do this for the
entire Office Mac application?

I wouldn't - Office applications are built on a common Office engine,
so there would likely be incompatibilities between them.

Even if you did, I don't think you could update XL to the pre-SP2 update
while leaving SP2 installed on the suite.

Hello J E McGimpsey

If I uninstall the entire suite, will I loose Entourage data such as Address Book, appointments and in Entourage Calendar?

If
"Yes" Can I save them and add to the re-installed app. ?

Hi DSS;

If you were intending to update to the most recenly installed level it would
not be a problem. What I'd be concerned with, though, is that now that
you've run Entourage with the SP2 update the DB would be out of synch with a
prior update level.

I honestly don't know what to suggest but - no reflection on any of the
other responders here at all - you might want to inquire in the Entourage
group. Regulars there may have additional insights to offer.

Hello Cybertaz

Can I save my address book and transfer it to Entourage safely, once re-installed?

If so, How?
Cheers

As I said, I don't know what to tell you & I don't want to give you bad
advice. Those who can best address the question will be found more readily
in the group that deals specifically with Entourage.

I've cross-posted the message for you, so follow up there for replies.

Can I save my address book and transfer it to Entourage safely, once
I'm not sure what application has your current Address Book.

Most PC applications will export as .csv file. If not a tab delimited file
also works.

See these pages for help with contacts.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/import_export/index.html>

Convert Mail from Windows to Mac

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/cross_platform/win_mac.html>

Plaxo is a free online option that make the transfer process easy. It's
free. You upload from your current application then the contacts are there
for download into your new application. It has version for both Mac and PC.

Hope this helps!
