Excel opening installer

J

Joe K.

I have a Win98SE machine with Off2KPro. If I open/click
directly on an Excel spreadsheet, i.e. c:\filename.xls the
installer launches looking for files. If I open Excel
from the programs menu then go to "File, Open,
filename.xls it opens fine. I already
replaced/reinstalled the installer update.

note: all other office progs are fine.

Any thoughts? Tanks in advance.

Is it possible you upgraded to this and are using an old shortcut which is
no longer pointing to a fresh installation. Right click on the shortcut,
(even if it's in the start menu) and select properties. Check it points to
the correct location.

Sure hope someone has a suggestion for this problem. My computer recently
lost its mind. Had to reinstall most everything including OffXPPro on my
Windows Me system. Every time I launch Excel from Start>>Programs or a
spreadsheet via a double click the installer arouses and begins installing
Excel components. It never did this before the crash. Any ideas what's
causing this now? Same thing happens with Word.

With Excel closed out.......

Try to re-register by Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes) and note
the <space> before the / mark

You may have to enter your full path to excel.exe....in that case surround
with quotes as in..... "C:\mypath\to Excel\somewhere\excel.exe" /regserver

For Word the re-register command is slightly different

Start>Run "winword.exe /r" (no quotes and note the space before the /
mark). Again, you may have to enter the full path to winword.exe

If no joy, post back. There are other methods that involve Windows Folder
Options and File Types.

Well, that procedure didn't make any difference (did have to enter the
complete path as you suspected).

I should mention that the earlier reinstall of Office did not go smoothly.
It stopped midway and asked for the Office disk with SP-1 on it. All I have
is the original Office CD. Fumbled around and somehow the installation
carried on. But now when going to the Office Web site to check for updates
the autoscan does not work. One of the possibities mentioned is that it
can't find the .MPS files from earlier updates.
