Excel opens 6 or 7 files when it launches?

Recently when I try to open excel by selecting a xls file, it opens up
6 or 7 files. Some are pdfs, doc etc. I have no idea what is going on.
Any suggestions

In Preferences: General, if you select a default file location, it
opens all the files in that location.

Almost -

It's the Alternate Startup Path, not the Default File Location.

Any file in the Alternate Startup Path, or, if you haven't set that, the

Microsoft Office 2004:Office:Startup:Excel:

folder will open when XL opens.
