Excel opens file paths

R

Rob James

If I double click an Excel spreadsheet to open it, Excel tries to open each
part of the path and file name as a separate file if it has spaces in it.
e.g. for a file on the desktop where the full path is "C:\Documents and
Settings\User\Desktop\spreadsheet.xls" I will get the following error
messages (I have shortened the full message):

Could not find "C:\Documents.xls" (Press OK)
Could not find "and.xls" (Press OK)
Could not find "Settings\User\Desktop\spreadsheet.xls" (Press OK)

Then the file will open.

It is only Excel 2003 from an Office 2003 Basic Edition installation, i.e.
Word does not do it. If I try to open a file in the root directory of the C:
drive, it opens and then tells me it is already open.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
