excel opens hundreds of spreadsheets when starting

I installed Office 97 on WIndows XP home. When attempting
to open excel, the program immediately opens hundreds of
spreadsheets. So I updated office with SR1 and SR2, but
the problem still exists. Is there a registry problem or a
fix out there? I've had several registry problems with my
new computer.

Hi Joe,

This is usually the result of a malfunctioning add-in being loaded on
startup. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to your XLStart directory. If you
installed Office to its default location you'll find this at:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart

Remove any files that you find in that directory and your problem should be
solved.

Hi Chris,

Use Windows Explorer to navigate to your XLStart directories and remove
any files you find there. Depending on what operating system you're running,
one of them will be located at:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart

and for Windows NT/2000/XP, there will be another one at:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

where <username> is the username you're logged in with. Once you've removed
any files you find in the XLStart directories, the problem should go away.
