Excel opens mach and mach.sys on every startup

Excel opens the files mach and mach.sys in read-only mode in two,
separate worksheets every time I start it. (Files from the root of my
OS X drive)

Trashing Excel's preferences had no effect.

Running OS X 10.4.5
Excel 2004 for Mac 11.2.3

Any suggestions?

Check your startup folder

HD:Applications:Microsoft Office 2004:Office:Startup:Excel:

for aliases to the files.

If you trashed the preferences with XL open, the old prefs were
rewritten to the prefs folder. Check to see whether you have an
alternate startup folder specified in Preferences/General.
