Excel or Word 2000 steal CPU Usage.

Randall Scott

I am on a Windows 2000 Professional PC, 256 DDR Ram,
933mhz Pentium III, 20 GB drive. Only until recently,
when I open 1 or 2 Word 2000 or Excel 2000 documents, my
Word & Excel hangs. When I go to the Windows Task
Manager, I notice that my CPU Usage is 100% and either
Word or Excel is stealing my CPU usages. Unfortunately,
this causes me to end the task & close Word/Excel.

This only starting happening yesterday. I used to be able
to open 3 Word & 3 Excel documents at the same time. Now
I can't.

What can I do? How can I check what other Office 2000
programs may be running in the background to steal my CPU?

Your help is much appreciated.

Randall, first thing that I would try would be to check your entire system
for antivirus and spyware, particularly if you do a lot of web surfing. As
far as the latter, I always run Lavasoft's Ad-Aware followed by Spybot. Both
are free, and I find that the combination of the two works well.

This won't help, but I've been plagued with that problem
for a few years now. When I see a CPU max out, it tells me
that there is a loop (in the system) somewhere. Another
problem, is that the programmers apparently weren't
diligent about releasing storage when finished with it.
I gave up and bought a new computer and switched to Excel
2003 (which I'm told is Excel 2002). Just started using
it, so I'm not sure how things will change, but there are
MANY other annouyances in this Excel than the one you have.
