I have been waiting for postcode calculations functionality to be added to
Excel for some years. I was expecting that as the UK postcode database was
to be 'freed' this year the add ons would start to turn up.
I enquired of one of the online postcode distance calculators
(
http://www.postcode.org.uk/) if they could make a built in distance
calculator for Excel, but they said the volume of data would not fit, but it
might be possible to design a function that would instruct Excel to look up
the necessary data on line. I would like to be able to calculate travel
allowance/CO2 figs and so on, just from a post code column in Excel, but the
functionality you describe would obviously be useful too. A chap named
Austen at Postcode dot org was very helpful, and said they may be able to
design a bespoke function for us, but we have not gotten round to it yet. I
should give them a try if I was you.
Alternatively there are a lot of people making add ons for Google Earth, and
you may find that a question to the 'Google Earth Community' turns up a
function that has already been made. There are already geotagging
applications that do what you want via GPS. If you get your driver to take
a picture at each stop, the route can already be loaded into GE
automatically, via say Picasa.
