just recently, excel was very very slow at start up. up til that point
it opened normally, so I trashed the excel.plist and the excel
preference document. Excel started up ok but now i dont have any
preferences in the pull down menu. I thought the app would create new
prefs on start up but that didnt happen.

any thoughts??

It should recreate the preference file. Could you provide a little more
information about the version of Excel and the location of the
preference file you removed. Since the preference file did not recreate
itself you may want to uninstall office using the remove office tool
and then reinstall. Just remember to move your microsoft user data
folder to the desktop if you have contacts in Entorage.

First, which version of XL and which OS are you running?

If you're not seeing the Excel/Preferences menu item, then the only
solution I know is to run the Remove Office application (for v.X, found
in the Value Pack folder on your install disk, for Office 2004, found in
the Additional Tools folder of the Applications:Microsoft Office 2004
folder.

XL04 produces two Excel.plist files, com.microsoft.Excel.plist in the
preferences folder, and com.microsoft.Excel.prefs.plist. The latter is
in the ~/library/preferences/Microsoft folder, and contains most of the
actual XL prefs. Trash it, too, along, perhaps, with the Excel Toolbars
(11) file in the same folder.

Make sure you trash the files with Office apps closed, otherwise they'll
write the old versions back to the disk when they quit.

Note that Remove Office doesn't touch the MUD folder, so you won't need
to move it anywhere.
