The MS Office security patch KB923272 prevents the execution of 2 Excel
processes by 2 different users. To reproduce, create a "Scheduled Task"
using user "A" that starts MS Excel when the computer starts. Restart
the computer and log in as a different user. Verify through the Task
manager that Excel is started running as user "A". Via the start menu
(or a shortcut), start MS Excel. Without patch KB923272, this succeeds.
With the patch installed, Excel cannot be started for the second user
until the Excel process from the scheduled task is terminated.
When Excel fails to start, there is no error message in the Event
Viewer. Attempting to start Excel a second time produces a dialog that
says Excel failed to start the last time and asks if I want to start
Excel in Safe Mode. If I respond with a "yes", Excel will start in Safe
Mode. If I respond "no", Excel fails to start and puts an entry in the
Event Viewer that the user denied the request to start in safe mode.
I have made the following changes in "Component Services" in an attempt
to get this to succeed: Expand the Component Services node to "Component
Services" -> "Computers" -> "My Computer". Right click on "My Computer"
and select "Properties". Select the "Com Security" tab. I gave Local and
Remote Access rights and Local and Remote Launch and Activation rights
to all users. This did not help.
Is there any way to allow this scenario to succeed with patch KB923272
installed? We have an application that relies on this functionality.
