Excel programming is a subset of Visual Basic for Applications or
VBA. Learning about VBA in general is very usefull, as well as
learning to share information between various Microsoft Applications.

VBA is often looked down upon by CS departments because they don't
consider a serious programming environment. Likewise, many employers
consider it a lesser skill. You'll be more employable if you have a
range of skills, probably including some .NET and JAVA experience.
You may end up writing VBA automation, but you'll likely get taken
more seriously as a programmer if you have additional credentials.

In those environments where VBA _is_ taken seriously, you'll need to
demonstrate a combination of business knowledge and programming
skill.
