Excel Randomly Continuously Generates new Temp Files

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Excel will sometimes start generating temp files with the naming convention xxxx00 where the x's are hex digits. Excel seems to continue to generate these files until the file is closed in excel or excel itself is closed. I'm not sure which. The files are generated at the rate of about 50 to 200 a second. Has anyone run into this issue? It's becoming problematic when it happens on network shares.

Has anyone seen this issue? This is becoming a bigger issue for us. We have several macs in a corporate environment. The issue is reproducible. Any and all help would be appreciated.
