Excel recovery after crash

I have all my files saved on our network server, which is backed up daily.
However, my system crashed, and the files I was working on at that moment
were not saved. Usually, when I re-boot my computer excel gives me the
option to recover the unsaved files. This time, however, my hard drive may
be bad on the local workstation. I realize now that the temporarily saved
files resided on the C drive. How can I change the settings so these files
reside on the network? I tried to go into excel under tools---options---auto
recover save location: and change it to a network drive location. I
periodically check that location and nothing is saving to it. Also, is this
the same location that would need to be changed for the scenario where the
system crashes unexpectedly? Thanks

Usually it's a bad idea to save files themselves (as opposed to the
autorecover files) directly to network shares. I'd guess it's an even worse
idea to try to save autorecover files to network shares.

As for not seeing them in directory listings, I'd suspect the autorecover
files are hidden files, so you'd need to set your directory listings to
include hidden files. If you're using Windows Explorer, that'd mean changing
its options to display hidden files.

Can you elaborate a little? I was always told by the tech people that all
files should be saved to the server because it is much more secure than my
local hard drive, and backed up nightly, whereas my local hard drive is not.
Are you saying that is a bad idea?

Frequently the cause of the "crash" is the loss of the network
connection, having the temp file stored locally allows you to recover
the file.
