excel restarts on error "too many cell formats"

I am useing Excel quite extensively containg so many linked sheets. Recently
I started facing problem. On editing/formatting particuular or group of
cells, it doesnot allow anyaction indicating "Too many cell formats". The
application auto recovers the file and restarts. The recovered version
sometimes removes all the formats from the original file. It is really
frustrating. Can somebody help?
