Excel Saves Slow to network share

Excel file takes between 5-15 MINUTES to save to a windows 2003 network
share. The temporary file that is created seems to increase in size very
slowly. The total file size is approximately 30 Mb. If I do a straight file
copy between the client and server it takes about 5-20 SECONDS to copy wich
is reasonable. While this save is taking place it also negatively affects
other users performance in network share as well.

Why would using the save command slow it down to unresonable amounts of time?
How can this be fixed?

(Already tried to disable virus scanner and Open file agent for backups)

Double-click the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop, and disconnect any
mapped network drives that are not currently available.

Is there a reason that you know of that that works?
Unfortunately the mapped drives are in "connected" state.
