Excel saving and freeze up

Our whole office is experiencing the same difficulty - we are on a network and every day we will be working on files and you go to save it and not every time but often it just hangs and freezes and creates an enormous file with a numbered name. and when I say enormous we are talking 10MB or more. Can anyone explain what is happening?

I'm sorry I can't explain but I have the exact same
issue. For me it started when I upgraded my desktops from
Win2K / Office XP to WinXP / OfficeXP. I used the Remote
Installation Service. My current fix is to re-install
Win2K / OfficeXP. No more lockups in Excel.

I've isolated my problem to the following combination of
apps:
Win2K domain - DFS
WinXP
NAI - Viruscan.

After I install the NAI - Viruscan and I retrieve a file
from the DFS share, it locks up when I try to save it. If
I retrieve the file from a server share it never locks
up. This is only on my WinXP boxes.
