Excel says there is not enough memory to open small files

I have some friends that send small (48kb) Excel files to others who are
unable to open the files and get a error message that there is insufficient
memory.

If I send them the same file, they are able to open the file.

Is anyone familiar with this problem?

Thank you.

It's hard to tell without knowing which of the 8 versions of XL your
friends are using.

one situation that's a known bug:

an unupdated XLv.X will produce files that give that error when XL98
attempts to open the file. Updating Office using the updaters found at
MacTopia (http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx) will fix this
problem.

Otherwise, I think you need to provide more information...
