Excel shows "Too many different cells formats"

When I try to change a cell's color, Excel 2002 often
show me a message box "Too many different cells formats",
and the content of the cell is deleted.

Could you solve my problem

Thank you

Excel can only hold around 4000 different formats and that
includes all the elements of format.

see details and suggestions here:

I've seen this problem where people from different
countries have worked on a file. the solution is to
reduce the formatting combinations. Use 1 or 2 fonts use
3 or 4 sizes, just a couple of colours etc.

cheers
