Excel shuts down every time I try to save work

All my saved workbooks and worksheets will no longer allow me to make changes
and save - I get an error message and excel shuts down. I noticed that under
properties for worksheets affected, the MS-DOS name now contains a "~".
Worksheets that do not contain the tilde allow me to save. Where did this
come from and how do I restore my work sheets?
