I am using Office 2008, 12.1.0
I have seen the posts here where other people talk about slowness. I
see developers asking if they can see the file, or be told how to
replicate it. To that, I say it is great you guys are here in the
group, looking to solve problems. What is not great is that this app
even made it out the door. You do not need any other peoples files,
some of the most basic things take forever. Forever being more than
30 seconds.
I find it faster to force quit and re-open a saved file than to undo,
that is how bad it is.
This is on a MacBook 1.8 with 2Ghz. Same tests on a PPC Dual G5 2.0
with 8GB ram. Same experience, give or take a few seconds.
Make a column, maybe 300 rows of data, make a chart/graph of it. Add
another column, apply that to the x axis. That process alone, would
take me 5 minutes to accomplish. Just the charting part, just to make
the chart, thats after I wasted all the time entering in random data.
Now lets print it, another few minutes because it tries to make a
print preview. Toggle over to page setup, and wait another few
minutes to get back.
Really, I know there will be people in here telling me it is my
system, or I need more ram, or this or that. I can take this test to
any machine I want, and it will happen. The application is not
usable.
For what it is worth, I can take 1 million rows of data, join them on
themselves, and rejoin the result on itself again, in MySql, running
on OS X on a G4 with 1GB ram, and a measly 800Mhz CPU, under a
second. Thats over the web, with latency and all.
I already dropped Entourage, my favorite email app ever because year
after year the developers seem to forget the most important thing
about email is reading text. So to not have the ability to use a
monospaced font did the app in for me. Sure, I can wait 5 years for
them to drop waste and atsui or whatever other legacy they are tied
to, but I do not want to.
Sorry to be a downer. I have asked, for over 5 years now, to be put
on a beta. I have submitted detailed bug reports, and never heard
replies after the submission, only to see the bugs still persist. When
OpenOffice, with the hoops it has to jump through to even run on OS X
is faster than a native app, we can all see where this is going to end
up.
Sorry for the rant, if there is a MS developer who wants to talk to
me, email me, only if you plan on following through. If I take the
time to debug something and send in data, and you can not share the
courtesy to let me know you even received my effort, do not bother.
