Excel spreadsheet

Could you please help. I am trying to create a spreadsheet that can be shared. The problem is I want to make it so that some of the cells/columns can be changed by any user but some I want to be able to lock as they will contain formulas that I do not want them to be able to change.
Unfortunately I have tried going by the 'HELP' section within excel and no matter what I try, I can only either protect the whole sheet/workbook so nobody but myself can alter it or have to leave it unprotected.
Within the older style excel you were able to do this, how can it be done now.
Your help would be much appreciated and thank you in advance for your prompt response.

Same was as in all other versions. By default, cells are locked (when
the sheet is protected), so:

- Select the cells that should be user modifiable
- Choose Format/Cells/Protection and uncheck the Locked checkbox
- Choose Tools/Protection/Protect Sheet, and protect for contents.
