excel spreadsheets on disc-file

how do i reverse or undo a 'read only' on a spreadsheet
file on excel? I had made three sheets on excel and filed
them on a disc for future use- to be converted for mail
merges. now the program is telling me that i cannot
manipulate the files for a mail merge because it is a
read only file. how do i correct this problem with this
disc file?

First.......copy the files from the disk to your hard drive. DO NOT work from
a disk, floppy or CD.

Second........open Windows Explorer and uncheck the "read only" attribute.

Third......try your mail merge.
