Excel tables to HTML - some columns convert too wide

Dale Bricker

Hi, I am trying to create a table for a webpage, and since
I know almost nothing about webpage authoring, someone
suggested that I create the table on Excel and then convert
it to HTML. I know next to nothing about Excel either, but
I was able to easily create the table on it nonetheless, on
version 2001. The problem is, when I use the conversion
option within Excel, the result is a table that has one or
two columns in the middle about four times wider than the
rest. They all should be 2.17 wide, with columns at each
side about two times wider. I have monkeyed with everything,
but all that happens is that the wideness shifts to other
columns, but doesn't go away. The table should have two
columns at each side

thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Dale,

Column width is controlled by putting the selection cursor into a column and
using Format > Column Width from the menu. Do you have any merged cells?
That could be causing the browser to not render things properly.

If you happen to have a URL for the web page, that would be helpful. Also,
what browser were you using?

Jim:

No, no merged cells at all that I'm aware of.

The URL is:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bricker/small_haplotype_chart.htm

Note that the columns for markers# 3 and 4 are too wide. All but the
columns
at either side of the table ought to be 2.17 wide, and that is the way
they
are in Excel prior to conversion to HTML, when it goes wrong.

I am using Netscape 7.02 and MacOS9.

Thanks for your response, and for your advice.

Hi again,

There's something odd about the HTML/Javascript combo.

If I paste the web page's source code into an empty excel worksheet I see
your table and down on row 147 some additional stuff. If those rows are
there in your Excel source, they are the reason why the column width is not
right.

The source code looks like the lower stuff is in its own table, though, so
that really shouldn't be the cause of the trouble, and it doesn't cause
trouble in Internet Explorer, but it does cause trouble in Netscape (or
other Mozilla derivatives).

Since IE is discontinued for both Mac and Windows I'd go for making the code
work with Netscape.

I kinda think its the second set of table tags (the three rows starting with
"Our Sponsors") that are causing the browser display problem. Experiment by
making the page without them and see how it looks.
