Excel, tabs become new worksheet

S

StarFire

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Today (01/03/2010) Excel started to act funny when I had a big file open for a while. When I clicked on a tab it would open in a new window.
The file is xlsx, as described in an old discussion I found in the Mactopia forums on the same subject which had been closed without being solved...

I have OSX 10.6.2 on an early 2008 MacBook Pro and Excel 12.2.3 (091001).
Further I noticed that the problem occured after my laptop had been in sleep mode for a while (lid closed). In my opinion there is nothing wrong with the file itself (as suggested in earlier discussion).
I have a very important additional software running in the menubar: Foreversave. This application makes sure that Excel files are saved every 5 minutes, with versioning. I have reported the issue to the developer, but believe the error may reside in the Excel application itself.

Suggestions welcome.

Things to try:

Quit Excel and re-open the workbook. Is it fixed?
Restart the computer and re-open the workbook. Is it fixed?
Turn off Foreversave. Is it fixed?

After closing Excel the problem was solved (for now...).
Just wanted to report unexpected behaviour of Excel.

The tips you gave would be standard procedure for me.

I am chuckling now. You are a typical Mac user. You start your computer
up, keep applications open running for days or months at a time without
ever closing them. You are flustered when something goes wrong because
it is so rare. It's been so long since you had a problem that you didn't
think to try closing the application and start it up again.

It's a testament to the reliability of Macs and Mac software that you
(and many others) can depend so much on your computer. My chuckle is
that those Apple ads touting reliability are really true. Most Windows
users I know have a robust set of solutions they use constantly to deal
with problems.
