Excel to AppleWorks question

Hello:

I maintain several small Excel databases on my non-Intel Mac Mini (OSX
1.4.9). I also use AppleWorks 6 to convert them to the AppleWorks format so
they are readable by other Mac users who don't have access to Excel.

After conversion from Excel to AppleWorks, I find that many of the entries
are corrupted by a lengthy series of question marks (as in
???????????????????????)

I find that most of the time, these question marks are preceded by some sort
of punctuation; perhaps a semi-colon, a close quotes, or a parenthesis.

Because many of the other Mac users who download my databases find this to
be at least moderately annoying, I'm wondering if there is a fix that can
keep this from happening.

Does anyone have any ideas that might be insightful here?

I thank you in advance for your assistance!

Have you looked at any of the other file formats that you can save files
in while working in Excel?

If you saved a file as HTML for example, would that work in your
situation?
