Excel trace dependents bug?

There seems to be a bug that I can consistently replicate with the
trace dependent function on Excel 2004. When the error occurs, it
fails to trace a dependent cell if the function is called through the
taskbar, but it works correctly if called from the menu Tools /
Auditing / Trace Dependents.

Any insight into this problem?

Very irritating!

I can't replicate this. Have you applied all the updates to XL04 (check
Help/Check for Updates...).

You might try, with XL closed, renaming or deleting the

~:Library:preferences:Microsoft:Excel Toolbars (11)

file (where ~ is your home directory).

Does this happen in all cells of all workbooks? Does the cell you're
checking for dependents contain a constant or formula?

Hi John -

I was surprised to find that I *can* confirm this - at least I am
experiencing something odd, just not sure from the lack of detail in op if
it is the same. Am running:

Office 2004 11.2.3, fully updated
OS X 10.4.4

The sheet has a table of figures totaled & averaged at the end of each row &
totaled at the bottom of each column. If I Trace Dependents on a cell in one
of the columns using Tools>Auditing>Trace Dependents, the arrows appear
pointing to the calcs at the end of the row as well as bottom of the column
- as they should.

However, if I use the Auditing toolbar to Trace Dependents only the arrows
pointing to the calcs at the end of the row appear. The sum at the bottom of
the column does *not* get marked.

Have tried resetting the toolbar to no avail, but haven't dug any deeper
yet, other than to determine that in another workbook the toolbar seems to
work OK.
