Excel troubles

I have an EMac using OS 9.2.2. I have been using Excel 5.o for some
time; now suddenly, when I go to drop down an item from the menu line, I
get a blank space and then nothing happens. The cursor moves but I have
to warm start the computer to get it started again.

Similarly, I am getting cursor lock-upwhen I try to open Internet
Explorer. Again, all this is quite new.

When I tried to reload Microsoft Office, I get a dialog box indicating
that the "Installation was not completed satisfactorily".

Any thoughts about what could be causing my problem?

Sounds to me like you are having some corruption of the HD/System/name
it. I would recommend running TechTool Pro and see what it comes up
with.
I have an old 7500 at home that we use for e-mail and web-surfing, it
also ran 9.2.2 and I was getting similar behavior. For me TechTool was
not able to solve my problems and I ended up having to do a clean
install of the system. This time round I didn't go all the way to
9.2.2 but kept it at 9.1. It's been running like a charm now for about
3 months again.
Good luck, Jonck

Hi JoncThanks for the response.

I have bought Norton Utilities and run it against the HD. Found some
problems, fixed them, but no change in the Excel situation. I also ran
Norton's Anti-Virus against the drive with similar results.

I tried to install a new version, via Microsoft Office, but get a
strange dialog box statement as indicated in my first note.

I think you've been lucky so far - MS's official position is that XL5 is
not compatible with OS9:

I've seen posts from others that they've been able to keep XL5 going in
OS 9.1, but I wouldn't necessarily expect it to always remain stable.

Try trashing your excel preferences files.
