That is somewhat like asking how a saw compares to a hammer ... they are
such different tools for different purposes that the question makes no
sense without information about what you are trying to accomplish.

I had the feeling, this would be the answer ;)

If I should try to compare Excel to Crystal Reports I would say:

- Excel is tabular data manipulation tool, that can do some reporting.
- Crystal Reports is a report tool that can do a some data manipulation.

I this is true, then it must be possible to compare the two. My problem is,
that I don't really know Crystal Reports. We use Excel as a 'reporting'
front-end to databases; mainly because of it's strong data manipulation
features, and because we know it very well.

Anything can be compared, including a saw & hammer. Like a saw/hammer, it
sounds like the *value* of the comparision
is more in line with what you're after.

In short, what I hear you asking is this: "Is Crystal Reports or Excel more
robust at redering my data in meaningful ways?"

If I hear you correctly, then the answer is Crystal Reports, hands down.
That product was built to do just what you're asking.
It can pull data from several different databases (not just one) and create
the reports you need. And its functionality far outpaces
Excel for what its supposed to do.

Here's the vendor website:
