Excel will not let me save

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Dear all
Excel gives me the message:
Excel cannot access the file 'Users:USERNAME:Document:Foldername'
I have the same problem with PowerPoint. But not with Word

I have tried saving the files in different places- Desktop etc.- but get the same result

Would highly appreciate suggestions on what to do.
