Excel won't let me select any formatting options under chart options or chart date

When I try to enter a title for the chart or the axis, excel will not let me select an option. The chart title is selected with a checkmark, but the title will not enter. When I try to select axis title, the palette will not move a checkmark to axis title. Furthermore, when I try to select labels, there is a check next to none and it won't let me choose anymore options. In fact once I make a chart, I cannot alter it in anyway using the formatting palette.

A few questions:

What type of chart, and does this happen if you change chart types?

Does this happen with all charts, or just this one?

Was the chart created in XL08 or another version?

I tried it using three charts: the basic column, pie, and scatter charts. All the charts were created in XL08.

Actually, sometimes it works. If I constantly click on one of the entries in the toolbox eventually it will work, but it's completely random and takes about 5 minutes to get a response.

Hmmm... that sounds like something's going on with your system - the
Toolbox should be (nearly) instantaneous.

Does this behavior happen in a fresh user account?

No, I only have one user account on my system. I'm using the main account. Plus, the funny thing is that all other menus in the formatting palette and toolbox work. I'm only having problems with the chart menu.

I asked about the user account to find out whether it was specific to
your account, or whether it was general to the machine.

Create a new account and try it - do you see the same results?
