Excel & Word Templates not working correctly on external drive

When I save a template (Excel or Word) to an external drive and open it
through Excel/Word it does not save correctly as a template. Information
keyed to the template is saved along with the template as a revised .xlt
file.

However, if I open the template directly from the external drive the
template works correctly and directs me to save it as another name with the
..xls extension.

Any thoughts as to why?

That's correct behavior as implemented some time back - how far back depends
on whether you're using a Windows or Mac version & which specific one... You
don't mention so I can't be more specific. That enables opening the template
in order to make & save revisions to it.

You can also use File> New (not the New icon) in Win XL or File> Project
Gallery> My Templates on a Mac to create new files based on the template.
