Excel XP - can't type into spreadsheet.

When I open a a new (or any) spreadsheet. I click on a
cell and the cursor changes to a fat plus sign and drags
across all the cells, not allowing me to type anything
in. I uninstalled and re-installed MS Office XP,
downloaded the updates and I still have the same
problem. Can anyone help me with this?

I've used Excell for years and have never had anything
like this happen. The other office products seem to be
working fine.
