Excel XP - File is locked by another user or myself

One of my users is having a weird problem...
Sometimes if he opens a document for the second or third time that day it will say it is locked (network drive, not shared documents). Other times he'll attempt to open a document and it will say another user already has it open, even though he knows that user doesn't have it open (network drive, shared documents). We use a Sun server.

It seems to be an ongoing issue that randomly hits any of the two dozen documents he deals with every day. I've checked the registry settings for the AutoDisconnect setting, but it is set to "F" rather than "0". I've also cleared out the temp files.

Any thoughts?
