excel XP files are not being recognized by office XP

I've recently updated my version of Office XP. Now my
excel files are not being recognized. Can anyone tell me
how to fix this?

If I double click a known excel file, it will open with
excel XP. However the ICON is NOT an excel file icon.
This is causing problems when I attach these files to
email.
