Excel XP & Windows Vista ?!?

Hello,

I work with Excel XP & Windows Vista and I have a very strange problem with
deleted files. I have done the following:

1. I copied an Excel file 'test.xls' to the directoty 'C:\Program
Files\XYZ\'

2. I started Excel XL and opened the file 'test.xls'.

3. I closed Excel

4. I removed the file 'test.xls' and the directory 'C:\Program Files\XYZ\'.

5. I re-started Excel

6. I selected history list of Microsoft Excel and clicked on the file
'test.xls' - and I was able to open it!!!


I do not get this, why is this possible?

My experience over many years is that the file should not have opened and
you should have gotten an error message telling you that the file could not
be found. The fact that the file could be found and opened tells me that
you have your folders mixed up. I think (just think) that you had the file
in one folder and copied it to another folder. That means you had 2
instances of the same file in 2 different folders. And that you opened the
file originally from one folder, then closed the file, then removed the file
from the other folder, then opened the original file from the history list.
But then again, I know very little about Vista. HTH Otto

Hello Otto,

I verified that I removed the files and the directories. I suppose that this
has something to do with the user/security settings of Windows Vista.

That's very strange. When I open the Windows Eplorer I can't see the program
directory, but when I start Excel and try to open the file I can see the
directory...?!? This is very curious...

One of the new features of Vista is "previous versions" and "shadow copies".
I never use them so I don't know all the details, but when you removed the
file, Vista kept it in its list of "previous versions" or "shadow copies"
and Excel was probably opening that file.
