Why would you use those? (That's a sensible question: I can't think of a
reason, other than if the user does not have Microsoft Office to begin with.

The Microsoft converter provides read and WRITE ability to anyone who has
Word/Excel vX or above. It simply adds .docx to the list of file types Word
and Excel can handle.
And because it does not work through an RTF intermediate step, it does not
do quite so much damage to a modern file as the competitors do
