When used in Excel it finds the square or cube etc. root of a number.

=9^(1/2) returns 3
=125^(1/3) returns 5
=256^(1/4) returns 4

What does the function or symbol ^ mean?

I'm surprised but it *is* tricky to find out the meaning of ^ : the power
symbol, if you are encountering it for the first time. You can get help if
you ask for calculation operators but that's not what I would have thought
of first!

Or conversely the square or cube etc.

=2^2 returns 4
=2^3 returns 8
=2^4 returns 16
